Garbage Disposal Tips
Benefits of a garbage disposal
A garbage disposal provides a wonderful environmental benefit. Each day, TONS of food waste gets dumped into landfills. It sits there to decompose and creates methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 20 times more potent than CO2. This is a hazard to our ozone environment. By using a garbage disposal, that food waste is kept out of the landfills and keeping our environment safer.
“If 30,000 households in a community switch from disposing food waste in a landfill to use of a food waste disposer,” states the PE Americas report, “the global warming potential of disposing of food waste would be reduced 1.9 million kg of carbon dioxide equivalent. This is equivalent to the community not driving 4.6 million miles in the average American car or 100 community members going carbon neutral for a year.”
An added benefit to installing a garbage disposal is that it can protect your plumbing. Food scraps often find themselves accidentally down the drain. Chemical drain cleaners aren’t effective at clearing clogs caused by food. Running the garbage disposal keeps clogged drains at a minimum. If a disposal gets clogged, running water usually solves the issue.
Foods to avoid in your disposal system
However, there are certain things you should NEVER put into it, to prolong its lifespan:
- Stringy foods like squash pulp
- Fibrous foods like potato skins
- Starchy foods like pasta
- Coffee grinds
- Fruit pits or seeds
Those are just the most common food products we advise against putting down your garbage disposal. Please consult your owner’s manual for a more comprehensive list.
The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day for plumbers because of jammed garbage disposals. We recommend that if guests or family is helping you prepare for the big meal, that you remind them of the above list. Also, we recommend that you move any smaller objects away from the sink, so that they don’t accidentally get knocked into the sink and down the disposal. To help in your preparations, here is a video with a tip for what to do if your disposal gets clogged. As always, we are here to help if it’s a stubborn clog! 860-223-1036
