Every home has a different water shut-off system. You may have a “turn-style” valve, also called a “gate” valve. To turn it off, turn it clockwise. The phrase “Righty tighty, leftie loosie” is an easy way to remember which direction to turn it when you have water spraying everywhere.

Another water shut-off valve you may have is a “ball-style” valve. To turn it off, turn the lever so it is perpendicular to the pipe, as shown in the picture below. The handle of the valve is labeled with “on” and “off” positions, but over time, those markings can fade.

On and off positions of a water shut-off valve. This is a “ball valve” type of shut-off.

The type of valve you have may depend on whether it’s for a toilet, water heater, boiler or outside faucet.

Locate your main water shut-off valve

If a you have a burst heating pipe, it’s important to know where your main water shut-off valve is. This valve will turn the water off to your entire home.
