Clearing clogged drains is one of the most common plumbing service we perform. Most of the time, there is an indicator before the drain is completely stopped up. The water in the kitchen sink or bathtub will drain slower and slower until it stops draining completely. It's rare that a clogged drain happens out of the blue. If your drain suddenly appears clogged in the wintertime, you may have a frozen pipe.
Causes of clogged drain
Common causes of a clogged drain are:
food and grease build up
hair build up
foreign objects, such as bath toys or utensils
sanitary products such as tampons and pads
We recommend that all food products and sanitary products be disposed of in the trash. To prevent hair and foreign objects from getting into your drains, you can purchase drain screens from your local hardware store. Also, try not to store any small objects around your sinks and toilets that may accidentally get bumped down your drain.
New player in the game
Over the past few years, we've seen a new 'player' in the clogged drain business. It's wipes. We aren't just talking about baby wipes. We mean the wipes that can be found in the toilet paper aisle that claim to be "flushable." Word of advice: they are NOT in the least bit flushable!!
Consumer Reports made this short video that shows exactly why you should NEVER flush these wipes:
"Flushable" comes with a high price tag
Although they are marketed as safe for septic tanks and sewer systems, they clearly don't break down. You'll wind up with a mess in your home AND an unexpected bill. Not only that, but your taxes may go up! Many municipal water treatment plants need costly repairs due to the damage these "flushable" wipes are causing.
“DEERFIELD, MA - They sell these things off as flushables, and yes, they go down, but they’re a living nightmare for wastewater treatment plants,” said Scarborough. That results in the plant having to use much more electricity and work a lot harder than it was designed for to efficiently clean the water, costing the town money in the form of electric bills and equipment repairs. He said the wastewater treatment plants are already two of the biggest electricity users in town, and having to replace the plant’s motors can cost up to $65,000 each."
