How do you know if your toilet is running? One way to tell is that you will hear it filling on its own. Some people describe this as a "phantom flush." Another way to tell if you have a running toilet is that it won't stop filling when its flushed.
How to fix a running toilet
The most common cause of this plumbing issue is a worn out flapper. When you lift the lid on your toilet tank, there are a few different parts. The flapper is the rubber plug that sits on top of the drain at the bottom. When you flush the toilet, the flapper lifts to allow water to pass.Due to minerals in the water, a flapper eventually wears out. The rubber will crack and not close properly. This allows water to get through and causes the toilet to run.
