What makes GFCIs different
Electrical Safety Foundation International explains that GFCIs automatically cut power when a plugged in item comes in contact with water or begins to "leak" electricity. If a person becomes part of a path for leakage current he or she will be severely shocked or electrocuted. GFCIs prevent deadly shock by quickly shutting off power to the circuit if the electricity flowing into the circuit differs by even a slight amount from that returning.
